“I am a survivor of depression. I know how rough the journey was for me. That’s why I decided to join the few who are creating awareness about mental health” – Princess Chidiebube Uwaezuoke.
Princess is a Grassroots Development Champion passionate about making impact, seeing lives change and generally making our world a better place.
She is a graduate of Pharmacy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Currently, she is working as a Pharmacist.
Princess worked on “Depression, Stress and Suicide Awareness” project at her at local church, Trinity Methodist Church Nigeria, Umuogele, Amuda Isuochi, Abia State.
She chose the topic because she found out that issues pertaining to mental health are not generally accepted and conversed about. As a survivor of depression and a health practitioner herself, she wanted to use her knowledge and sensitize people on mental health.
In the course of the project, Princess addressed the following issues;
- stigmatization of persons who are mentally challenged,
- non-professional management of mental health cases,
- triggers/causes of depression,
- mismanagement of stress,
- suicide and situations surrounding it,
- the proper approach to handling a person mentally or psychological challenged
- and the detriments of substance/drug abuse, etc.
At the end of the project, some persons opened up and reached out for help while some others pleaded for follow-up programs on mental health which she carried out in November, 2021.
Princess has taken action to sensitise her community on depression, stress and suicide.
