THE NEED
Following the research and need analysis conducted by DO’s Grassroot Development Champion in Monkey village in October 2018, we realized that a 15% maternal mortality rate was expected to occur in the community within 3 months, owing to lack of proper medical counselling and pre and post pregnancy care.
According to the latest UN global estimates, 303,000 women a year die in childbirth, or as a result of complications arising from pregnancy. This equates to about 830 women dying each day – roughly one every two minutes. The majority of these deaths are from conditions that could have been prevented if women received the right medical care throughout their pregnancies and during birth.
DO MATERNAL HEALTH OUTREACH IMPACTS 30 PREGNANT WOMEN AND 200 MEN AND CHILDREN.
A DO Grassroot Development Champion (GDC)- Mavis Akpotabor, who is a health, wellbeing and community development advocate was troubled by the maternal mortality rate in her community and desired to tackle this challenge. Motivated by the desire to see women, children and even men live healthy lives as well as reduce the rate of maternal mortality, Mavis’ big dream is to inspire over 1000 men and women, community members, leaders, stakeholders and civil society to take action today and get actively involved towards ensuring healthy wellbeing and livelihood in their communities.
She decided to take action under the Relief Hub project. At the core of the Relief hub project is a mission offering that seeks to inspire and organise opportunities for individuals and groups to provide community-centred philanthropic and rehabilitation support for victims of disasters, conflicts and underprivileged members of society. The support delivered is designed to help them lead an appreciable standard of living and so, it is measurable and trackable. From feeding missions to clothing missions to health outreaches to orphanage missions to sanitary/hygiene missions and even MSMEs & Trading Grants, these projects help in improving outcomes and secure livelihoods.
Implemented in partnership from Junior Chamber International(JCI), Detha Foundation, Sam Empowerment Foundation and other partners, Mavis coordinated a maternal health outreach in her community- Gaban Tudu, commonly known as Monkey village in Dutse community, Bwari LGA- FCT on the 26th January 2019.
IMPACT
During the outreach, 30 pregnant women received delivery kits, the right medical care and counselling. In addition, over 200 children and men were given access to free malaria drugs and supplements and they were able to know their HIV status.
