A Community-Centered Approach to Ending Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
Background
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains a persistent violation of human rights, especially affecting women and girls across Nigeria. Globally, almost one in three women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence at least once in their life.
It is deeply rooted in social norms that devalue women, promote their objectification, and normalize violence and silence around it. While survivors often go without critical support, many communities particularly those with low literacy rates lack the knowledge, language, or awareness to challenge and prevent GBV.
Short-term responses have proven insufficient in reversing systemic harm. This project recognizes that lasting change requires sustained rehabilitation for survivors and education for vulnerable populations to disrupt the cycle of violence and rebuild safer, more equitable communities.
